Sombrero Island

Sombrero Island is one of Anguilla’s gems. Recently designated a Ramsar Site, it provides important nesting habitat for regionally and globally important populations of Bridled tern, Brown noddy, and Brown booby.

The Critically Endangered Sombrero Island lizard is found here and no where else in the world. It lies approximately 40 miles to the north of Anguilla (approximately a 1.5 hour boatride from the Anguilla mainland), was mined for phosphate in the 1800s, and once had a manned lighthouse (which is now automated).
